FAQ

Why can't I register for the site?

Membership to this site is limited to teachers and staff in the Florida State University English Department. However, much of the site content is available to non-members.

If you are a Florida State English Department teacher or staff member, the directions for registering for the site are as follows:

  • Look for "User Login" on the left side of the page.
  • Select "Create new account"
  • Next, you'll have to think of a username for your account. Pick one that's
easy to remember. For instance, you could use your login name for your
email account. Write the username down that you decide on. Try to avoid using spaces, uppercase letters, and random punctuation marks in your username -- stick to lowercase letters and numbers.

  • Then, enter your email address.
  • Fill in anything else you want to fill in.
  • Select "Create new account" at the bottom of the page.
  • Select "New User" when you're finished.
  • You will get a notice that your password has been mailed to you. It reads: "Your password and further instructions have been sent to your e-mail address."

You'll have to login and check your email to get your passworrd. Know that getting your password could take a couple of minutes, depending on your email service. Look for an email with the subject line "Account details for X at writingtest," where X is the username you entered up above.

In the body of the email will be your password. Write it down and keep track of it. You'll be able to change it to something easier in a moment. If for some reason you have not received this email after a few minutes, email Dustin at dra02@fsu.edu. Be sure to tell him what username you registered under. He can manually send you a password if something goes wrong.

I don't like this awful password the site gave me. How do I change it?

Once logged in, use the edit account link in the left hand menu. Enter your new password twice in the available fields at the bottom of that page and select "Save user information." Note that you can also modify additional information for your user profile on that page.

When using InternetExplorer 6x, the text on the site displays too small to read (or too big). What do I do?

There's a bug in IE that processes the CSS for the site theme incorrectly. Make sure that "View->Text Size" is set to "Medium," and the writing.fsu.edu site should display properly.
