Mapping The Terrain Using Your Nole GPS Going Off The Map Sharing Road Stories

Imagine you're in a first-year composition course.  Your professor has just assigned your first paper.  You’ve picked your topic. You’re all set to write. Maybe you think, “It’s going to be a breeze.” Maybe you’ve always done well on your high school papers. Then you meet with your professor, and you realize you’re doing it all wrong. “Eight long pages? What does he mean, use MLA? How do I write with style? What style?” Suddenly, the breeze becomes a hurricane, and you're blown off course.

Welcome to the Writing 'Noles.  This e-journal is here to help you become acquainted with the first-year writing courses while providing insights and advice from those of us who have been in your shoes.  This is your hurricane survival guide.  We understand how hard it can be to transition from high school to college, and we want to make it as easy as possible.  Believe it or not, the first-year writing classes can be a challenge.  Many students go into their writing classes underestimating the difficulties they will encounter. Sometimes college freshmen get stuck in their high school ways and realize too late that high school and college are two different worlds. This is where we come in.  We’re going to help with “Mapping the Terrain” by giving you tips for writing your papers, finding rest stops, and enjoying the trip.  By “Using Your Nole GPS,” we can provide you with helpful resources to guide you in the right direction when you’re feeling lost.  For times you want to “Go Off the Map,” we can offer you an outlet for your creative needs.  Finally, we’ll “Share Road Stories” from our own experiences at FSU.  We hope that this e-journal not only gives you some relief in your journey through first-year composition but also enables you to enjoy the scenery.  Good luck on the road!                                                                                                     Meet The Staff
